Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a “special military operation” in Ukraine early Thursday, launching attacks in cities and forcing Ukrainians to flee the country or seek shelter in basements and subway stations as explosions were heard in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv.

Key Facts

Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser in the Ukrainian President’s Office, said more than 40 Ukrainian soldiers and 10 civilians had been killed since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Interior Ministry said Russia fired cruise and ballistic missiles targeted at infrastructure near major cities, including Kyiv and the second-largest city Kharkiv.

Long lines of cars formed in Kyiv as Ukrainians headed out of the city Thursday morning to find safety in parts of Ukraine closer to neighboring Poland and NATO troops.
