More than 30 teenage female soccer players from Afghanistan’s youth development team landed in a London airport with their families Thursday to begin new lives after American reality star Kim Kardashian West paid for a chartered flight to bring the players to the U.K.

Key Facts

Shortly after, Kardashian West with her shapewear brand SKIMS offered to pay the full cost of the chartered flight from Pakistan for the group of 132 people, made up of players and their families, Margaretten said.

The players, all between the ages of 13 and 19, were staying in Pakistan on temporary visas after fleeing Afghanistan out of fear for their safety amid the chaotic Taliban takeover.

They’ll follow U.K. coronavirus measures and quarantine for ten days after arrival.

Leeds United, which competes in the English Premier League, has pledged to assist the players and their families as they resettle in the U.K.

Crucial Quote

“I’m so happy and so proud of these girls. They were traumatized,” Khalida Popal, former manager of Afghanistan’s national women’s soccer team who helped organize the players’ escape, told the BBC. “They’ve been through so much and managed to stay strong. Now they can start a new life and breathe freedom.”

Key Background

Members of the team say they received death threats over playing soccer. The Taliban has already banned girls and women from taking part in multiple facets of public life like playing sports, attending school and having careers. Last month, the players and their families were granted British visas that will allow them to resettle in the country. Afghanistan’s women’s soccer team and the girl’s youth team were resettled in Australia and Portugal, respectively.
