‘Eternals’ Director Confirms Who That Post-Credits Scene Voice Was

By News Creatives Authors , in Business , at November 5, 2021

Like any good Marvel movie, Eternals has the contractually obligated pair of post-credits scenes, one after the “splashy” credits, and then an even shorter teaser if you sit all the way through the entire thing.

The first is one that leaked out ahead of time thanks to early reviewers, but to discuss any of this, we are going to have to go into spoiler territory. But I mean, you probably shouldn’t have clicked on a post-credits scene article if you haven’t seen the movie yet.

The main question fans will probably have about the post-credits scenes, other than “wait is that Harry Styles?” (yes), is who the voice speaking to Kit Haringon’s Dane Whitman, a character who goes on to become Black Knight in the comics.

As Dane goes to grab his family’s mystical sword, the Ebony Blade, a voice from behind him asks, “Are you sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?”

This is not meant to be up for interpretation. It’s a very specific actor playing a very specific part in the MCU. My immediate thought was Sam Jackson’s Nick Fury, recruiting a replacement Avenger. Others in my theater were going on about how it was Doctor Strange.

But nope, Eternals director Chloe Zhao has confirmed that it’s Mahershala Ali, who is playing Blade in an upcoming MCU film:

“That was the voice of one of my favorite superheroes, Mr. Blade himself. Blade, Blade, Blade, yeah!” Zhao told Fandom.

Oscar winner Mahershala Ali was cast as Blade back in 2019. The movie does not have a fixed released date. A previous rumor said October 2022, but filming was pushed back until summer 2022, so that seems somewhat unlikely. Probably very late 2022, early 2023, at this rate. So it may be a long time until we see the face to match the voice, though I suppose Blade could be teased in other projects as well.

The other post-credits scene was a bit more involved, with Harry Styles showing up as Eros, aka Starfox, with Patton Oswalt in yet another MCU role (after SHIELD) as his buddy Pip the Troll. Eros is indeed the brother of Thanos, as the movie says (no real family resemblance there), and is the son of two Eternals (did not know they could have kids). What role he has in the future of the MCU is somewhat unclear, but if Eternals itself gets a sequel, it seems likely he’ll be a part of it. But I suppose that depends on box office returns.

So, the Blade voice cameo is probably a bit more interesting. Though if you could not identify Mahershala Ali’s voice from a single line, I wouldn’t blame you, and hopefully we have cleared everything up here.
