Topline

One of the NFL’s strongest rosters is set to become even more formidable, with the Los Angeles Rams landing Denver Broncos’ star linebacker Von Miller in a trade announced on Monday, in a hope of strengthening the 7-1 Rams’ defense.

Key Facts

Miller’s agent, Joby Branion, tweeted confirmation on Monday of reports that the Broncos and Rams were finalizing a trade for Miller.

Miller was named to eight Pro Bowls between 2011-2019, and he’s widely considered one of the best linebackers of his generation.

In exchange for Miller, the Rams will give up a second and third round draft pick in 2022, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

What To Watch For

Miller adds to a Rams’ star-studded defense that already includes defensive tackle Aaron Donald and cornerback Jalen Ramsey. The Rams’ next game is on Sunday Night Football, hosting the Tennessee Titans.

Surprising Fact

According to Schefter, the Broncos will stay pay $9 million of Miller’s $9.7 million salary he’s due to make during the remainder of the season. Miller is in the final season of a six-year, $114.5 million contract he signed in 2016. At the time, the contract was the richest for a defensive player in NFL history.

Key Background

Miller, 32, has been well-known to football fans since his college days at Texas A&M, where he won the Butkus Award as the nation’s top college linebacker in 2010. He’d go on to be picked second overall by the Broncos in the 2011 NFL Draft, which is unusually early for a linebacker to be taken. But Miller has lived up to the hype, recording more than 110 sacks in his time with the Broncos. In the 2015 season, he helped lead the Broncos to a win in Super Bowl 50, and was named the game’s MVP, becoming one of just 10 defensive players in NFL history to win Super Bowl MVP honors. Miller’s also translated his success on the field to business ventures outside of football, scoring endorsement deals with companies like Microsoft, EA Sports, Adidas and Old Spice. He was named to Forbes30 Under 30 list in 2017, and in 2018 appeared on “The World’s Highest Paid Athletes” list and the Celebrity 100. Miller was unanimously selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s 2010s All-Decade Team. He was the only linebacker unanimously picked for the team.
