‘Squid Game’ Knocked Down Netflix’s Top 10 By A New Offering

Squid Game is slowly receding on Netflix’s Top 10 charts. It spent a long time at #1, then almost just as long at #2, but now a new recent offering has pushed it down to #3 on the US charts, on the day it’s likely to take over the country with Halloween costumes.

The new offering is Army of Thieves, a quasi-sequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead. Snyder co-wrote it with  Shay Hatten, and strangely, it’s actually directed by its star, Matthias Schweighöfer. The film takes place in the same world as Army of the Dead, but where the outbreak is contained to Nevada and has not spread across the ocean yet to Europe where this movie takes place. So, this is a heist flick, not a zombie film. It just…takes place in a world where zombies exist somewhere else.

It all sounds a bit strange, but it seems to work. The film is reviewing well, with a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 81% audience score. It has slowly been working its way up the charts since its debut, but unseating Squid Game is a new step, and something other new Netflix movies like Hypnotic did not manage.

However, still planted at the #1 spot is You season 3, which was the first show to unseat Squid Game, and has not left that position since its debut. Netflix has not released any numbers about You season 3 yet, but clearly it’s performing incredibly well, and season 4 was already a sure thing well before this.

As for Army of Thieves, Army of the Dead 2, with more actual zombies, is going to be getting made by Snyder, Netflix has confirmed, though we will have to wait a bit longer for that. I’ll be honest, despite the “Army” name, I never connected the dots that this was related to Army of the Dead at all, until I researched it for this post, so now I’m definitely going to check it out to see what all the fuss is about. Will this spawn even more “Army” spin-offs? Clearly Netflix has a burgeoning cinematic universe going on here, so perhaps they’ll try to take advantage of that, after failing with other action projects like Ryan Reynolds’ 6 Underground.

As for Squid Game, it has probably peaked until season 2 comes around, which you can bet is going to be a massive hit. Even though that’s without question going to happen, it has not been officially confirmed by Netflix yet, as they’re likely working out the details of the new deal which should result in a sky-high pay bump for everyone involved. We’ll see what the chart does this week, and if Army of Thieves can dethrone You as well.
