Police Say Victims In Norway Attack Were Stabbed, Not Killed By Bow And Arrow

The five people killed in the Norwegian town of Kongsberg last Wednesday died from stab wounds and not from bow and arrow shots as previously reported, police said at a press conference Monday, a strange development in the case of the country’s worst attack in over a decade.

Key Facts

Five people were killed and three more injured on Oct. 13 when a man, who has since been named as 37-year-old Espen Andersen Braathen, went on a rampage in the municipality located about an hour’s drive from the capital Oslo.

Police had initially reported he was armed with a bow and arrow, but inspector Per Thomas Omholt told the media the five fatalities — four women and a man, aged between 52 and 78 — “were killed with stabbing weapons” both in public and in their homes.

The three people injured included an off-duty police officer who was shot with a bow and arrow early on during the roughly half-hour attack, but the perpetrator apparently discarded it in favor of the unspecified stabbing weapon or weapons, authorities said.

After the initial reports of a bow and arrow police “later added that other weapons were also involved,” according to Reuters, but did not explain on Monday why it took so many days to clarify the manner of deaths.

Key Background

Braathen, a Danish citizen, is being held in a secure psychiatric facility and is believed to be mentally ill, according to investigators. His attack last Wednesday was the worst in Norway since right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik murdered 77 people in July 2011, most of them teenagers.
