GM To Reveal 400 Mile Chevrolet Silverado EV At CES 2022
Earlier this summer CES and General Motors
Only a few new details have been revealed about the truck including that it will offer a range of more than 400 miles. Retail customers will also be able to get a full fixed glass roof option, something that has become increasingly common on a wide range of vehicles in recent years and a first for a full-size pickup truck.
Unlike the Ford F-150 Lightning that launches in spring 2022, the Silverado will not be based on a modified version of the existing internal combustion engine truck. It will be built on GM’s Ultium platform that is shared with the new GMC Hummer EV that is launching this fall.
One of the benefits of that platform is the availability of a four wheel steering system, although it’s unknown if the Chevrolet truck will offer the Hummer’s crab walk feature or focus on providing a tighter turning radius for better maneuverability.
Using the 200-kWh battery from the Hummer, the presumably lighter Silverado is expected to top 400 miles on a charge, one-third more than the best offering on the F-150. The Silverado will be offered in both work truck and consumer variants. GM is not yet saying when the Silverado will go on sale but late 2022 or early 2023 seems likely with production occurring at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant.
