FC Barcelona Versus Levante Preview: Team News And Lineup

Barcelona’s stuttering start to the season has been hard to watch.

Unable to buy a goal with their manager on the brink of being fired, the Blaugrana are beset by injuries, and also – in today’s case – suspensions.

Due to the red cards they picked up in the 0-0 draw against Cadiz on Thursday night, Dutch duo Frenkie de Jong and his coach Ronald Koeman will not be able to feature on the pitch or bark orders from the dugout respectively.

“I have to learn from the sending off,” admitted Koeman at his pre-match press conference.

“I need to calm down. But I am only human and there are times during games when it’s hard to accept decisions.”

Yet hope of what could be does arrive in the scripted return of Ansu Fati, who after 10 months on the sideline with a serious knee knock is expected to get a cameo towards the end of an important clash versus Levante at the Camp Nou on Sunday.

“Getting Ansu Fati back is very important,” said Koeman.

“We have a plan in place for his gradual reintroduction. He’s in the squad and will play for a maximum of 15 minutes. It is very important not to over-rush things … He won’t be back to his best in just two games or two weeks.”

Real Madrid drawing and defending La Liga champions Atletico Madrid losing already this weekend, Barca have the chance to gain ground on the title challengers from the capital with a win.

If they can get past the visitors, who are yet to notch a victory themselves this season, the Catalans would rise as high as fifth with a game in hand due to a trip away at Sevilla that was canceled thanks to complications which grew out of the last international break for South American players.

Though he will have to watch from the stands, Koeman can still of course choose his first XI.

In it, Marc-Andre ter Stegen will start in goal with Sergino Dest switching to left back, Gerard Pique and Eric Garcia forming a central defensive partnership, and Oscar Mingueza at right back.

In a 4-4-2, Sergio Busquets will provide pivot support to a La Masia midfield pairing of Nico Gonzalez and Gavi plus Philippe Coutinho, while Luuk de Jong and Memphis Depay try once more to get some sort of goalscoring chemsitry off the ground.
