DoorDash Will Now Deliver Alcohol

By News Creatives Authors , in Business , at September 20, 2021

Millions of DoorDash users will now be able to order alcohol for pickup and delivery, the company announced on Monday, putting it in competition with similar services like Postmates, Instacart and Uber’s Drizly, and grabbing a piece of a growing online alcohol sales market.

Key Facts

The new feature is being made available for over 100 million people across 20 states and the District of Columbia, as well as Canada and Australia.

Customers will have to go through a “rigorous” ID authentication process in the app to verify their age, DoorDash said in a press release on Monday.

Over 30,000 wines, beers and other liquor products will be offered from thousands of stores and restaurants across the United States.

Alcohol purchases can also be bundled with food orders.

Big Number

7%. That’s how much online purchases should make up of total alcohol sales, according to the Financial Times, citing alcohol analyst IWSR. Last year it was only 3.4%.

Key Background

DoorDash’s expansion comes after a 20% rise in alcohol sales in 2020. Those numbers declined somewhat earlier this year, however, after the initial pandemic-driven boom. The company’s press release further cited a report from Nielsen that found alcohol was “the fastest-growing e-commerce department among consumer packaged goods.” DoorDash had previously only delivered alcohol using third-party channels as part of their “DoorDash Drive” service. One of their top competitors, Uber, bought the alcohol delivery service Drizly for $1.1 billion in February 2021.
