Walgreens Boots Alliance chief executive Rosalind Brewer has begun creating her executive team, announcing three key hires the company says “represent a clear signal of her priorities” for the drugstore chain’s future that includes healthcare, digital transformation and growth.
Brewer, who was hired away earlier this year from Starbucks Corp. as the global coffee chain’s chief operating officer, replaced Stefano Pessina as the global drugstore chain’s top executive, effective March 15.
Her new hires are a diverse group with healthcare and retail backgrounds. The Walgreens Boots Alliance and Walgreens appointments announced Friday are:
- Danielle Gray as Executive Vice President and Global Chief Legal Officer, Walgreens Boots Alliance. “She joins from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, where she has served as Senior Vice President, Chief Legal and Administrative Officer and Corporate Secretary since 2018,” Walgreens said.
- Tracey Brown as President of Retail Products and Chief Customer Officer, Walgreens. “Most recently, Brown has served as Chief Executive Officer for the American Diabetes Association since 2018, where she led a healthcare transformation and financial turnaround of ADA’s business,” Walgreens said.
- Jeff Gruener as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Walgreens. “Most recently, Gruener was with Walmart, where he served in a number of roles of increasing responsibility over his 12 years with the company, including SVP of Finance and Strategy, SVP of Merchandising Operations, VP of Finance for Sam’s Club and VP of Global Procurement,” Walgreens said.
“They will be instrumental in continuing to build momentum across our business, as we further innovate, and work to define the future of health and well-being in the communities we serve for many years to come,” Brewer said in announcing the new appointments. “I’m confident we will have the right leadership teams in place, bringing new energy and a wealth of experience to achieve our business and growth objectives.”
