CNN’s Jake Tapper To Secretary Of State Antony Blinken: ‘How Did President Biden Get This So Wrong?’

In an interview on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday, Jake Tapper asked Secretary of State Antony Blinken about President Biden’s answer to a question back in July, when a reporter said “your own intelligence community has assessed the Afghan government will likely collapse” should American forces be withdrawn.

“That is not true,” Biden said. “They did not reach that conclusion.” The President went on to say that “there’s going to be no circumstance where you’re going to see people being lifted off the roof of an embassy.”

But those are very much the images coming from Afghanistan today, as U.S. forces move to evacuate Americans from Kabul as the Taliban have rapidly overtaken the country. In July, President Biden said the possibility of the Taliban overtaking the entire country was “highly unlikely.”

“This is about leaving hastily and ineptly,” Tapper said to Blinken, asking “how did President Biden get this so wrong?”

Blinken said the Trump Administration had struck an agreement with the Taliban that American forces would leave the country, and President Biden believed the “the idea that the status quo could have been maintained by keeping our forces there, I think is simply wrong. The fact of the matter is, if the President had decided to keep forces in Afghanistan past May first, attacks would have resumed on our forces.”

Tapper had opened the public affairs program by saying “The state of our union is watching a tragic foreign policy disaster unfold before our eyes…the rapid crumbling of (Afghanistan) has caught the Biden White House flat footed…it seems shocking that President Biden could’ve been so wrong”
