A powerful way to build a multi-million or multi-billion-dollar business is to reach millions of people and impact billions of lives. That is no easy task if you lack the reach or customer base to do so, however.
It is one thing to be well-connected in one’s own region or country, but there is an entire planet full of people who might appreciate, benefit from or support what you have to offer. Do not limit yourself or your goals to just one locale or a few neighboring markets in your own country.
To truly expand your reach, there is nothing more beneficial than going global with your network.
If you or your brand want to be recognized globally, you will have to actually go global. As someone who has dedicated more than a decade to helping brands and personalities expand and evolve on a worldwide scale, here are the actionable steps I recommend taking to expand your reach and go global.
1. Global Professional Organizations: Start by looking at virtual events and by researching international branches of groups and organizations of which you may already be a member. There are several effective ways to connect with others through these avenues, as there is a vast array of peer groups, professional assemblies and institutions with chapters overseas. Some examples of those include the World Innovation Alliance, C-Suite Network and more mastermind-type organizations such as Bellwether Alliance. The organizations you choose will depend on your goals.
2. High-Profile Global Events: One of the most significant, impactful steps you can take to go global is to get more involved in targeted or exclusive events that cater to an international audience. Not only will you be expanding your network in real-time while at the event, but also images and news of the event can easily go viral via the networks of others involved. Building authentic human connections, fantastic public relations and a plethora of useful content are only small (but mighty) byproducts of attending high-profile international events. There is also an unmistakable power of proximity that can only come from being in the presence of greatness, and the majesty of travel always opens new doors when you are in the right mindset.
To edge closer to global greatness, consider attending some impactful destination events such as the Who is Who International Awards in Greece, the World Government Summit in the United Arab Emirates and the Global Couture Gala in California. (Full disclosure: I’m the global media ambassador for the Who Is Who International Awards.)
3. Global Nonprofit Organizations: Another stellar way to align with others who are on the same frequency while also expanding your reach is to get involved with international nonprofits or philanthropic endeavors that are meaningful to you. There are phenomenal opportunities to connect with others around the world while giving back and making a difference. For example, I’ve contributed to Global Goodwill Ambassadors and have been extended an ambassador title as a result, which enabled me to connect with others also aligned with their global causes. Other organizations of interest may include GIFT Global Initiative, Re:wild and charity galas (amfAR and UNICEF each hold annual galas, for instance).
4. Social Media: This one might seem obvious, but there are a number of people who are simply scrolling through the same feed full of the friends they have had for decades. That is all fine, as it is important to foster your existing personal relationships. But social media can also offer superb opportunities for connecting with others outside your region and building meaningful partnerships or alliances. LinkedIn, for example, can help you connect with others who share similar professional interests, skills or partnership goals.
The benefits of “going global” really cannot be explained in so few words, but it should be said that goals fade to dreams, then eventually disappear if we do not act on our own expansion and evolution. Let this inspire you to take action — stepping outside the comfort zone of your current network and into the wonderful world of going global.
A quote by Socrates speaks volumes here: “Man must rise above Earth to the top of the atmosphere and beyond, for only then will he fully understand the world in which he lives.”
