James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad arrived with some truly eye-popping reviews, and the first few dozen put it at a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, which made it the best-reviewed comic book movie…ever.
However, anyone who tracks this sort of thing knows that as time goes on, those early numbers tend to fall. It might be a few points or a couple dozen, depends on how things go.
Well, with 244 critical reviews in, The Suicide Squad…is still reviewing extremely well. It has settled at a 92%.
Where does that have it land in the grand scheme of major comic book movies? It’s a top 5 DC film, and the second best DCEU film behind only Wonder Woman. It’s even in the top 10 list for MCU films, higher on average than DC, and tied with James Gunn’s own Guardians of the Galaxy.
Here’s how the two lists shake out with The Suicide Squad’s new score. This is DC:
- The Dark Knight – 94%
- Superman (1978) – 94%
- Wonder Woman (DCEU) – 93%
- The Suicide Squad (DCEU) – 92%
- Shazam (DCEU) – 90%
- The Dark Knight Rises – 87%
- Superman II – 86%
- Batman Begins – 84%
- Batman Return – 80%
- Birds of Prey (DCEU) – 79%
And here are the highest reviewed Marvel movies with The Suicide Squad in there for scale:
- Black Panther – 96%
- Avengers: Endgame – 94%
- Iron Man – 94%
- Thor: Ragnarok – 93%
- Spider-Man: Homecomng – 92%
- The Suicide Squad – 92%
- Guardians of the Galaxy (also James Gunn) – 92%
- The Avengers – 91%
- Spider-Man: Far From Home – 90%
- Captain America: Civil War – 90%
And of course, we should keep in mind that this is a quasi-sequel to Suicide Squad, the lowest rated DCEU film which clocked a 26% on Rotten Tomatoes when it was released.
Audience scores are also high, an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes with thousands of “verified” ratings in, RT’s system of ensuring people have actually seen the movie. That may be a touch lower than it would have been otherwise as there are perhaps at least a couple fans in there bitter about the treatment of Ayer’s original Suicide Squad which WB allegedly made much worse, but who knows.
Regardless, The Suicide Squad is one of the DCEU’s biggest successes since the entire universe was formed, and it’s no surprise that WB is trying to pursue James Gunn for more future DC projects, whether it be this squad or something new.
For now, it’s a must-see for any DC fan, even if you were hesitant to go check out a movie with a nearly identical name to a very bad film from a few years ago. My guess is that hurts its box office a bit, but we’ll see if word of mouth can help it.
