Even with Covid-19 cutting audiences down to a sliver of the regular size, athletes dressed to impress at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, with extravagant and immensely detailed nail art a staple at many of the competition’s biggest events.
Though they’re just small details, intricate manicures—often featuring the Olympic logo or a country’s flag—have become an increasingly popular tradition at the Games as both a form of self expression and a medium for conveying national pride.
Nail art is so in demand among the athletes that salons have been set up within the Olympic Villages in recent Games, and can be so crowded it’s hard to get an appointment.
Top athletes won acclaim with their designs this year, including Sunisa Lee, who made history as the first Asian-American woman to win gymnastics’ most prestigious title, the Olympic all-around, while donning shiny, Olympic-themed acrylic nails.
Many of these Olympians had to tailor their looks around strict beauty standards for their sports, like gymnastics, which bans brightly colored nail polish to avoid distracting the judges.
