Pop Smoke’s new album hasn’t yet produced any major hits, which his last posthumous release was so successful in doing, but it does still manage to dominate the Hot 100. The rapper, who was shot and killed early in 2020, fills eight spaces on the 100-rung chart this time around, claiming the most real estate for himself, and he brings some very famous friends along for the ride.
Here’s a look at five of the most important moves on this week’s Hot 100 singles chart.
No. 1 – BTS – “Butter”
BTS have now controlled the Hot 100 for nine consecutive weeks, but within that run, two tracks have taken turns sitting at No. 1 on the most competitive of all the Billboard charts. After “Butter” ruled for seven frames, the band debuted their new single “Permission to Dance” in first place, scoring their fifth champion in the process. Now, just one week after they collected yet another leader, their former No. 1 “Butter” is back in first place.
“Butter” jumps back to the top spot as “Permission to Dance” falls to seventh place, and in the process, BTS make history as the first musicians to replace themselves at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in back-to-back weeks.
No. 14 – Normani – “Wild Side (ft. Cardi B)”
After months of silence from Normani, the former Fifth Harmony singer is back with her first proper single of 2021, and fans have made it a quick success on the Hot 100. “Wild Side,” a collaboration with Cardi B that comes with a must-see music video, opens at No. 14 on the chart, bringing both acts back to the upper reaches of the roster. The new tune is Normani’s third placement inside the top 20, while Cardi has broken into the area with 16 different cuts.
No. 15 – Walker Hayes – “Fancy Like”
Just a week or so ago, Walker Hayes scored his first-ever top 40 hit on the Hot 100 with current single “Fancy Like,” and now the tune has lifted even higher. This frame, the title jumps to No. 15, entering the top 20 for the first time. The track, featured on the country singer-songwriter’s Country Stuff EP, marks Walkers’ first appearance somewhere between Nos. 1 and 20.
No. 35 – Maneskin – “Beggin’”
In the weeks since they won the annual Eurovision Song Contest with their track “Zitti e buoni,” Italian rockers Maneskin have been rising on charts all around the world. The group’s other current single “Beggin’” has now jumped to No. 35 on this week’s Hot 100, giving the act their first top 40 win in America. The cut could easily continue to climb, as they are picking up new fans and reaching millions of new ears all the time.
No. 49 – Pop Smoke – “Tell The Vision (ft. Kanye West & Pusha T)”
As his new posthumous album opens at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, eight songs featured on Pop Smoke’s Faith full-length debut on the Hot 100, making him the king of the tally once again. Leading the way among the bunch is “Tell The Vision,” which features both Kanye West and Pusha T. The cut narrowly enters the highest half of the chart, opening at No. 49.
Only one of Smoke’s new songs, “More Time,” is billed as a solo cut, and it arrives at No. 80. Other Faith tunes that debut on this week’s Hot 100 include features from major players like 21 Savage, Future, Rick Ross and Dua Lipa.
