Taylor Swift’s Latest Collaboration Could Earn Her Grammy Love In New Categories

By News Creatives Authors , in Business , at July 26, 2021

More and more, it’s looking like the upcoming Grammy Awards may be completely dominated by Taylor Swift. The singer-songwriter has a ton of her own music that’s eligible, and she stands a good shot at racking up an impressive and possibly even historic number of chances to win due to what categories her tunes and full-lengths will be submitted in.

While the 2022 Grammys were already looking good to the superstar, who has already won 11 trophies, one new song released recently with her name attached has opened up her up to consideration in at least a handful of new categories, ones which she has never been nominated in before.

Just a few weeks ago, Swift teamed up with the indie rock duo Big Red Machine for the single “Renegade.” The tune reached the Hot 100 and became a top 10 hit on various Billboard rock rankings and even the Digital Song Sales tally. While the band has never been to music’s biggest night before, this may be their year to finally earn nominations (under this name), and with Grammy darling Swift now on board, things are already looking up for the pair.

While Big Red Machine has never been nominated for Grammys as an entity, the two musicians who comprise the act are winners already. Justin Vernon, better known as the star of Bon Iver, won Best New Artist a number of years ago. Aaron Dessner took home Album of the Year just a few months ago for producing Swift’s Folklore, and he will likely be up for the honor again this year for the same champion’s sister project Evermore. Dessner has also been nominated as a member of alternative favorites The National.

The three talents could easily earn a nomination for “Renegade” in Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance. Swift has never been included in the rock verticals, even with her folk-leaning Folklore, so these nods would be a first for her.

“Renegade” is also in the conversation, at least among some, for Record of the Year or, more likely, Song of the Year. When Big Red Machine drops their upcoming sophomore album How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last? in August, that will also be a contender for Album of the Year, though if the band ends up snagging a spot in any of these three fields, it will be a real surprise.

If Big Red Machine does end up being nominated for Album of the Year, Swift will collect yet another career nod in that highest of groups, as she will be credited as a featured artist on two songs on the set, and newly updated Grammy rules state that any act with that kind of official credit (as well as songwriters and producers) also get to count themselves as nominees.

At the moment, it’s tough to imagine Big Red Machine heading into Grammy night 2022 as major nominees, and the rock categories are far from certain for them as well. While it might be something of a long shot, there’s a story behind this release, and anytime three beloved artists come together, voters pay attention.
