The timing was, let’s just say, interesting.
As Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy and general manager addressed shareholders Monday about the ongoing drama with disgruntled quarterback Aaron Rodgers, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport provided a ray of hope for those that want Rodgers back.
#Packers QB Aaron Rodgers has indicated to people close to him that he does plan to play for GB this season, sources say. That is the expectation. Many factors at play, but with GM Brian Gutekunst saying he is “hopeful” for a positive outcome, there is a glimmer of optimism.
Rappaport’s news came just after Murphy told shareholders:
“We want (Rodgers) back. We’re committed to him for 2021 and beyond,” Murphy said. “He is our leader, and we’re looking forward to winning another Super Bowl with him.”
Green Bay’s veterans are scheduled to report for training camp on Tuesday, and the first practice of camp is Wednesday.
Rodgers indicated he no longer wanted to play in Green Bay earlier this offseason, but the Packers refused to trade or release him. With Rodgers under contract through 2023, his only options were to play in Green Bay or retire.
For now, at least, it appears Rodgers will be coming back to Green Bay for at least one more season.
